3 things you want to know (but were afraid to ask) about Facebook marketing

WILL PEOPLE GET ANNOYED WITH ME FOR POSTING REGULARLY AND FIND IT SPAMMY?

NO! The way the Facebook algorithm works now unfortunately means that your fans will see very few if any of your posts unless you put money behind them.

To give you an idea, if you do an exceptional post, I mean you tick ALL of Facebook’s boxes and you get maximum engagement but don’t pay for the post, you can expect a maximum of around 12% reach of your fan base (there are always exceptions to this rule but its very hit and miss!) if you create a post that doesn’t tick the boxes and is considered too self promotional, has more than the desired number of characters or even links people away from Facebook itself, you can expect as low as 0.6% fan base reach.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the average expected life span of a Facebook post is 2-3 hours, this means that if its not performing in this time, its unlikely too.

In answer to this question, Facebook simply wont show your following all of your posts if any so the more posts you do the better, it will work in your favor to keep your posts regular.

To quote Rick Mulready ‘Be consistent or be non existent’ so so true.

WHY AREN’T MY POSTS GETTING ENGAGEMENT AND OTHER PAGES ARE?

There are both long and short answers to this question.

The short – Its likely you are being too self promotional

The long – There are many factors that determine how many of your posts Facebook shows to fans and then which fans. A few things that are important to note are;

  • Are you posting enough?
  • Are you keeping the posts engaging and interesting or are you promoting yourself?
  • Do you know your target audience?
  • Are you posting at the right time of day?

Facebook is much more than just random posting, it takes careful planning and strategy but don’t panic! Once you learn the how, it will get easier and easier and before you know it you will be knocking it out of the park!

DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR ADS TO MAKE MY PAGE WORK?

This question comes up so often yet I feel it gets answered in so many ways depending on who you ask! So here is my answer……

It helps to put $$ into your strategy but get good at getting organic reach first.

Organic reach is the fan reach you get naturally without paying any money. If a post doesn’t naturally get organic reach then its unlikely your dollars will be well spent. Basically when I ‘boost’ a post I let it run for a day or two first to watch its natural momentum, this way I know that if I place some money behind it then its much more likely to gain a good ROI.

Also, be clear about what you want before spending money. Do you want to grow your fans, promote your post/offer, get people to your website or create brand awareness? If you haphazardly throw money behind your ads you will spend up big before you realise.

Last little pointer here….. Make sure you watch your ad performance, there is nothing wrong with starting small, just $5 a day or cap it at $10 and then increase or pause it depending on how it performs for you. I rarely put more than $20 on an ad until I have watched it do good things for me first.
